What happens if something goes wrong during my trip?

It is a question we don’t want to ask ourselves when preparing for the trip that we’ve saved for, but it is one for which we need to have an answer.

The reality is a majority of U.S. travelers do not have an answer. And as a result, they don’t take the proper steps to protect themselves, their trips, and their investment while traveling.

The solution is an easy one. Everyone planning a trip should be considering travel insurance like the RoamRight plans offered by Total Access Travel. Travel insurance helps protect against financial loss that may occur if you unexpectedly need to cancel your trip or if you experience a medical emergency while traveling.

I’ve worked closely with travel agents for years, and have heard the most common objections their travelers give to buying travel insurance. Chances are, you likely have similar objections now. And, honestly, I would probably have similar concerns if I didn’t understand the true benefits of a travel insurance plan.

These five most common objections to travel insurance are closer to old-wives tales than to truth, and I hope I can provide you with the facts that help you to see the immense value travel insurance can provide.

Objection #1: I don’t need travel insurance in the USA; my primary healthcare will take care of me.

Even if you are staying within the United States for the duration of your trip, your day-to-day health insurance may not cover you if you’re out of your network. And, unless you have a multi-state health insurance plan, many healthcare networks do not extend beyond state borders. So, if you are leaving your home state, you’ll be subject to out-of-network costs – if you’re even covered at all.

When you have travel medical insurance for a USA trip, you’ll have emergency medical coverage on your trip, regardless of your home health plan. And if you buy your travel insurance policy within 21 days of making the first payment on your trip, any pre-existing conditions you may have may also be covered.

If you are booking through Total Access Travel, you also have the ability to purchase the RoamRight Pro Plus plan which acts as your primary medical insurance for emergencies.

Objection #2: Everything I’ve booked is fully refundable, so I don’t need travel insurance.

Double-check if your travel supplier will offer a full refund for your deposits, or if they will apply your deposit to a future trip. And if they do simply give you a credit, how soon will you need to use it? If an airline offers no-change fees, you may feel like you don’t need insurance to cover the flight. But if you can’t travel again before the flight credit expires, you’re out your money.

Likewise, there’s much more to travel insurance than reimbursement for cancelled trips. If you have travel insurance, you’ll also have coverage for baggage protection, flight delays, a 24/7 emergency assistance number to call for help, and even AD&D insurance. Plus, you can get medical coverage and evacuation coverage, which can help you in getting home if you experience a medical emergency.

Objection #3: Since I’ll be in the United States, I’ll be able to get home quickly and easily if I need to.

Travel is unpredictable. What may be a simple injury at home can complicate the logistics of travel. Think about how difficult it can be to navigate through an airport on a pair of crutches. Or in a wheelchair if you are traveling by yourself. What if you need a flight upgrade to accommodate you?

Travel insurance for the USA can cover these scenarios. For example, if you experience a medical emergency and need to get home, your RoamRight travel insurance plan may cover for an air ambulance to return you home. If you can return home on an airline but need help, you may be able to get a medical escort to travel with you. And if you need a flight upgrade or accrue change fees associated with a new flight, those may be covered as well.

Objection #4: Medical emergencies aren’t common. I’ll take my chances.

True, medical emergencies are fortunately not regular occurrences for most people. However, when one happens, particularly on vacation, the results can be disastrous.

RoamRight has many stories of travelers who have experienced medical emergencies while overseas, but fortunately were covered by a travel insurance policy.

For example, there is the story of how one healthy traveler developed nausea and within days was diagnosed with kidney failure while traveling overseas in Europe. His medical care and evacuation home cost a total of $117,000. However, his RoamRight policy only cost him $28.

Or the story of how a multi-generational trip to Italy ended abruptly when the matriarch suffered a stroke. Her medical costs and evacuation came to $85,000. The total cost for insuring the entire family with travel insurance? $223.

The RoamRight YouTube channel has a number of stories of real travelers who experienced medical emergencies while on their trip, including a young woman who needed emergency surgery while in Spain:

Objection #5: I know for sure I am going on my trip, why would I need cancellation insurance?

Nobody plans a vacation thinking they’ll have to cancel it. But, as we have established already, things happen.

The same family who had the emergency in Italy above could have also lost an additional $2,600 in trip costs and additional expenses, but they recovered these costs thanks to their travel insurance policy.

Hurricanes and blizzards can wreak havoc on travel plans. Having insurance means that even if you can’t get to your destination, you won’t lose out on any deposits.

And any family is familiar with how often children can get sick. The video below show how RoamRight helped one mom when her daughter got sick right before their dream vacation.
